Special inspections are a method of ensuring public safety by making certain that buildings are constructed according to the minimum code requirements as well as the approved specifications and designs.

As the result of several high-profile structural failures with fatalities in the U.S. during the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, special inspections were introduced to prevent future tragedies. To determine this compliance often requires frequent inspections, testing at specific stages of construction and with the assurance that testing must be performed by an individual qualified to perform special inspections.
